About Pescador Island Marine Sanctuary

Pescador Island Marine Sanctuary is a small volcanic island situated in the Cebu Strait, near the municipality of Moalboal in Central Visayas, Philippines. Designated as a marine sanctuary, it protects a diverse underwater ecosystem characterized by lush coral gardens, steep drop-offs, and a wide variety of marine species. The island itself is uninhabited but surrounded by vibrant coral reefs which serve as habitat to numerous tropical fish, sea turtles, and pelagic species like sardines and occasionally thresher sharks. The sanctuary is part of the Moalboal marine conservation efforts aimed at preserving this ecologically sensitive area. Established in the early 1990s, Pescador Island has since become one of the most popular dive sites in the country, attracting divers from around the world to explore its underwater caves, swim-throughs, and impressive coral walls. Snorkeling around the island is also popular for those seeking colorful reef life in shallower waters. Its proximity to Moalboal makes it easily accessible by boat, typically via short ferry transfers from Panagsama Beach. Visitors might also enjoy whale shark watching and the seasonal sardine run, where millions of sardines form spectacular swirling shoals near the surface. Its rich biodiversity and clear waters make it a must-visit for marine enthusiasts, photographers, and adventure seekers. Conservation efforts continuously promote sustainable tourism practices to protect its delicate habitats while offering educational opportunities for visitors. The sanctuary highlights the critical role of marine protected areas in preserving biodiversity and supporting local livelihoods through eco-tourism.
